Youth Services

Every young person has potential; the difference is whether someone shows up, listens, and walks beside them while they find it.
Young people deserve the chance to feel safe, connected, and hopeful about their future. Many are navigating complex pressures at once: school, family changes, housing instability, mental health challenges, racism and discrimination, or involvement with youth justice and child protection systems. These circumstances can make it harder to stay engaged in education, find work, maintain relationships, and feel a sense of belonging.
At Mulga Projects, we know that behaviour is often a response to what young people have experienced, not a reflection of their worth or potential. We also recognise the specific impacts of colonisation, systemic racism and intergenerational trauma on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. Our Youth Outreach Services are built on the belief that with the right support, every young person can build on their strengths, reconnect with culture and community, and plan for a safer, stronger future.
Meeting young people where they are
Outreach means going to where young people are, rather than expecting them to come to us. Many young people don’t feel safe, understood, or welcome in formal service settings, especially when they have had negative experiences in the past.
Our Youth Outreach workers:
- Connect with young people in their homes, schools, neighbourhoods and community spaces
- Prioritise safety, trust and consistency in every interaction
- Take the time to listen and understand what life is really like for each young person
- Respect their voice, choices and pace, rather than rushing or judging
We focus on building relationships first, knowing that meaningful change starts with feeling seen, heard, and respected.
Walking alongside, not in front
We see young people as experts in their own lives. Our role is to walk alongside them as they navigate complex systems and decisions, not to dictate who they should be.
Through Youth Outreach, we support young people to:
- Set goals that matter to them (big or small) and map out realistic steps
- Stay engaged in school, training or employment where possible and appropriate
- Access safe housing, health and mental health supports, and legal or financial help
- Strengthen relationships with family, carers, Elders and other trusted adults
- Build everyday life skills like budgeting, time management and problem-solving
We work flexibly and creatively, adapting to what works best for each young person and their circumstances.
Strong culture, strong identity
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, culture is a vital source of strength, identity and healing. Youth Outreach at Mulga Projects is grounded in community leadership and cultural safety.
Our approach includes:
- Supporting young people to connect or reconnect with culture, Country, language and community
- Involving Elders and cultural mentors where appropriate and guided by community
- Creating spaces where young people can be proud of who they are and where they come from
- Challenging racism and discrimination in systems and advocating for fair treatment
We are committed to approaches that honour self-determination and community-led solutions.
Reducing system contact, increasing opportunity
Many young people we work with are at risk of, or already have, involvement with statutory systems such as child protection or youth justice. We aim to reduce unnecessary system contact by addressing issues early and advocating for supportive, not punitive, responses.
Youth Outreach helps young people to:
- Understand their rights and have a say in decisions that affect them
- Attend and prepare for case meetings, court, or other formal processes
- Navigate services like housing, Centrelink, mental health, education and training
- Access diversionary and pro-social opportunities—sport, cultural programs, peer groups, volunteering
By intervening early and providing wrap-around, practical support, we help create safer pathways and better long-term outcomes.
Why Youth Outreach matters
Outreach-based youth work can:
- Increase safety and stability for young people in their homes, schools and communities
- Improve engagement in education, training and employment
- Strengthen connections to family, culture, community and positive peers
- Reduce escalation into crisis services, youth justice or ongoing statutory involvement
At Mulga Projects, Youth Outreach is about more than responding to risk. It is about backing young people’s strengths, amplifying their voices, and creating the conditions where they can imagine and work towards a future that feels possible.
